Biographical/Historical note

Oliver George Barnes was born in Pontypool on 11 March 1894, the son of Oliver George Barnes and Sarah Barnes. During the First World War he served as a Gunner/Bombardier in the Royal Field Artillery. He died around 1977/8 in the Pontypool area.

Biographical/Historical note

This gun was being used right up until the Armistice at 11am on 11 Nov 1918. For the last barrage the number of rounds increased dramatically, probably in celebration of the Armistice.

 D6360/3/1 “Certificate of Employment during the War”: Bombadier Oliver Barnes of the 13th Battery of RFA. Reg No: 91911. (Army form Z.18) c.1918   1.0 item

Scope and Contents note

Certificate shows that he was on duty from 5 Jan 1915-26 Dec 1918, undertook an arms course on 13 Feb 1917, and was a Coalminer at the time he was enlisted. The G.18 refers to the fact that he could use a British 18-pound Field Gun.

Biographical/Historical note

Oliver Barnes' commanding officer, Major Eggleton, joined up in September 12th 1914 into the Honourable Artillery Company having turned down a commission into the Oxford and Buck Regiment. He fought in Egypt in 1915 before taking up a commission into the Royal Field Artillery. He then fought in France and Belgium and at the time of his death had reached the rank of Major. He was mentioned in dispatches on 18th May 1917 for gallant conduct in the field during the Battle of Arras; his Battery then moved to take part in Third Battle of Ypres (Passchendaele.)
