Biographical/Historical note

A Mining Records Office was established by the government in 1840 for the voluntary registration and preservation of abandoned mine plans. The Coal Mines Regulation Act and Metalliferous Mines Regulation Act, 1872, made the deposition of plans of abandoned mines with the Secretary of State a statutory requirement. In 1950, by agreement made between the Ministry for Mines and the recently-formed National Coal Board, coal plans were separated from the plans of other minerals which were then sent to Thames House, Millbank in London before being transferred to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE Bootle, Merseyside) in 1984. Between 1989 and 1993, English and Welsh non-coal plans from Bootle were dispersed to the relevant County Record Offices.
