Biographical/Historical note

The origins of Glandwr Baptist Church go back to 1662 when preaching services were held in nearby Glan-dwr Farm. The senior Baptist church in the area was Blaenau Gwent church founded in 1660. From this church and Penygarn church in Pontypool (founded in 1729), preachers were sent out to minister the gospel in "Llanhiddel" (Llanhilleth) parish. Meetings were held in the home of David Phillips from 1821; Llanhiddel members formed a separate church in 1837, many of the early members having belonged to Blaenau Gwent church. Glandwr Church was completed in 1839. Following the closure of the church c.2004, the building was destroyed by a fire in July 2007.
