Biographical/Historical note

Local authority responsibility for sanitary and medical supervision developed following the Public Health Acts of 1848 and 1872. Medical Officers of Health were an integral part of public health administration after 1875, when the Public Health Act opf 1875 required each sanitary authority to appoint a MOH.
