Biographical/Historical note

Monmouthshire Record Office was founded in 1938. Its first premises were at County Hall in Newport.

In 1974 the office moved to new premises at County Hall in Cwmbran and was re-named Gwent County Record Office, reflecting the re-organisation which took place at this time. Other changes in the service took place in this year: the records management service now included the new District Councils, and the activities of the Monmouthshire Archives Committee were taken over by the new county council.

The annual report for 1968 was the first to be published in this format.
