Biographical/Historical note

The firm of Bottcher was founded in 1878 in Leipzig, Germany, by Felix Bottcher. In 1910 a collaboration was formed between Bottcher and another firm of roller printer manufacturers run by Willhelm Loosen. The latter firm had originated in a tanning workshop in 1725.

Bottcher's presence in Great Britain began with a long-standing partnership with Winstones's Ltd, a firm based in Harefield. In 1973, Bottcher bought the Winstone's business and began roller production at this site. A second factory opened at Cwm Draw, Ebbw Vale, in 1975. The Ebbw Vale factory was created for the production of industrial rollers, and printing rollers, which were produced at the site in Harefield.

When it first opened, Bottcher Uk Ebbw Vale employed 42 staff. Its most successful period was in the late 1980s and the factory provided work in administration and sales as well as in manufacturing, at one time employing over 140 staff. Most of the staff were ex-British Steel personnel.

The factory enjoyed varying fortunes over the years, being badly affected by successive recessions. In 2012, a major decline in demand from British Steel and the printing press industry brought about the closure of the Ebbw Vale plant.
