Biographical/Historical note

The Dyffryn (now known as the Lower Dyffryn) in the parish of Grosmont "was for many generations the seat of a branch of the Cecil family", according to "The History of Monmouthshire" by Sir Joseph Bradney. The estate and manor of Wern-y-cwm ("Gwern y Combe" and other variant spellings appear in the deeds) in the parish of Llanvetherine and Lordship of Abergavenny descended to Charity, the wife of Philip Cecill of the Dyffryn. His grandson, another Philip Cecill, sold Wern-y-cwm in 1718 to the trustees of Williams of Caerleon's Charity (see D930/15-16) to provide money for a charity school in Caerleon. Several of the later documents relate to the transfer of the lands in 1901 in an arrangement with Monmouthshire County Council who were in charge of all charities in the county.

Scope and Contents note

Title deeds and documents relating mainly to the Dyffryn in the parish of Grosmont and Wern-y-cwm estate and "manor or reputed manor" in the parish of Llanvetherine. These, with other lands, were owned by the Cecill family. The main period covered by the deeds is 1665-1718 when Wern-y-cwm was sold to the trustees of the Williams charity of Caerleon, and a further group of deeds dated 1884-1901 relates to the trustees of Williams' school and their arrangement with Monmouthshire County Council.
