Biographical/Historical note

Reginald Thomas Jones, 1904-1975. R.T. Jones was born at Ty-Coch Farm, St. Mellons, Monmouthshire, in 1904, the third of five children. He did not follow his father or his three brothers into farming; his skills were academic rather than practical, and instead, having won a scholarship to Cardiff High School and achieved a first class honours degree in History and Education from the University of Wales at Cardiff, he went into teaching. His teaching career covered all types of state secondary school existing at that period: grammar, technical and secondary modern. In the 1950s he became head teacher of Fairview, and then Blackwood, Secondary Modern Schools [the latter is now Blackwood Comprehensive School]. He retired in 1967.

'R.T.' as he was known, and his wife Jacqueline settled in Blackwood in 1940; 6 of their 7 children were born there. He was always very involved with the life of the town and became interested in researching its history, in particular the evolution of the Chartist movement in the area. (His notes on Chartism are with this collection of records.) The names of John Frost and Zephaniah Williams were quite familiar to his children as they were growing up! In addition, his researches covered the origins of Blackwood in the 1820s and the 'social experiment' of John Hodder Moggridge in establishing a Robert Owen type of community, together with other aspects of the 19th century development of the area. He was in demand as a speaker on these subjects, and also as a local preacher through his lifelong membership of the Presbyterian Church of Wales.

His family heritage in faming was not forgotten. In the early 1970s he was commissioned to write the histories of both the Bedwellty and Mynyddislwyn Agricultural Societies.

R.T. Jones died in 1975, on November 4th which is, appropriately, the anniversary of the date of the Chartist march on Newport in 1839.
