Biographical/Historical note
The Port of Newport is located at the mouth of the river Usk to the south of Newport, Monmouthshire. In 1896 the Port of Newport was the third largest in the world for the exports of iron, steel and coal. The Port of Chepstow was situated on the River Wye. It declined during the 19th century, ceasing to be a customs port in 1882, and was then included within the jurisdiction of the Port of Chepstow.
