Biographical/Historical note

Oakdale, situated in the Sirhowy Valley, was one of three collieries opened by the Tredegar Iron and Coal Company in 1908.

A limited company, Oakdale Navigation Collieries, ran both Oakdale and Waterloo Collieries. Following Nationalisation in 1947, Oakdale became part of the South-Western division of the National Coal Board.

Oakdale Colliery eventually closed in 1989.

A detailed history appears in The Mines of the South Wales Coalfield, by Ray Lawrence.
