Biographical/Historical note

Michael Blackmore was born in Abergavenny in 1938. Following employment as a lithographer, he specialised in producing reconstructions of the industrial past of Gwent, and provided illustrations for the historic novels of Alexander Cordell. He died in 2015.

The illustrations were used in "Portraits of the Past," by Chris Barber and Michael Blackmore (Blorenge Books, 1996).

Hill's Tramroad was built by Thomas Hill II, manager of Blaenavon Ironworks, and ran between Blaenavon and Llanfoist. The tramroad was completed in 1821.

Biographical/Historical note

The Great Western station was the first railway station to open in Ebbw Vale, in 1852. The line provided a passenger service between Ebbw Vale and Newport.

A further station in Ebbw Vale was opened by the North Western Railway in 1867. The earlier station then became known as the Low Level Railway Station.
